A system suited to Southern African requirements has been developed with which wood anatomical descriptions and identification keys can be produced and online wood identification can be carried out. The system consists of 3 parts: computer-supported data acquisition; an information management system (the database); and computerized data processing. Additional software developed includes a pre-processor for the Pankhurst processor, a post-processor for the database, and various data-formatters. -- AATA
