Abstract
A survey of the applications of petrography and microbiology to stone monuments in Hungary. The methods of petrography are used for: rock identification; quarry location; examination of rock texture, components and cementation; determination of general characteristics of weathering; and justification for treatment. The mechanisms of biodeterioration of stone are outlined, with special reference to samples from Istvan Castle Museum, Eger.
