Discusses the responsibilities of those who train conservators. Systems operating in the UK, the conservation course at Gateshead Technical College, and a short training scheme in Zanzibar, staffed by members of the author's college, are compared. Summarizes the problems in aiming for international uniformity and the reasons why such uniformity is very important.
