In the suburbs of Vienna the only preserved painted decoration of a Baroque house still existing here was discovered under nearly 20 later layers. Being in very poor condition, the only way to save the masonry was to take nearly 40 square meters off the walls in 1976/77, and to transport them back to the original site after repair four years later. Most similar prior cases have been solved only by reconstruction or by transfer to museum conditions, where loss of original substance or isolation from its natural environment presents severe drawbacks. Butto integrate conservation of architecture together with its decoration is now one of the most imporant and pressing tasks. The transport of the consolidated painting plaster elements back to the exterior walls was done at the scaffolding using hydraulic plaster without any organic compounds. The vibration-method was used to reattach the plaster (see 22-1219 for details of this method). For plaster-consolidation silicate-ester was used, and a silicate-fixative served for weather-resistant retouchings.
