Abstract
The present publication deals with the problems connected with the conservation of a stone statue called A Pilgrim, standing at Slupia Nowa at the foot of Lysa Góra, in the range of the Holy Cross Mountains. The statue, which is standing in the open air, has been damaged mechanically, physically and chemically, and biologically. The mechanical damage has been caused by gun bullets and blows with blunt instruments. The physio-chemical damage has been the result of the action of salts soluble in water and temperature changes. The biological damage appears in the form of vegetation, concentrating mainly in the lower parts of the statue. The following program of the conservation works has been adopted: 1) the removing of foreign material from the surface of the statue, 2) extraction of the salts soluble in water, 3) structural impregnation with hardening substances.
