In the first part of his study the author surveys the life of shepards, their craft and skill in making articles for their own personal use, the manifold nature of the depictions on their artifacts and introduces the reader to a special kind of decoration: sealing wax inlay. In the second part he gives an account on the restoration of a cased mirror with sealing wax inlay in the possession of the Béri Balogh Ádám Museum in Szekszárd. After cleaning the object with fatty alcohol sulphonate, petrol and denaturated alcohol the heavily dried and cracked sealing was inlay was treated with a mixture of turpentine and dammar varnish in the proportion of 2 to 1. The leatherbands which served to open the mirror have become brittle and lost their moisture content, therefore they were soaked in a 50per thousand aqueous solution of glycerine followed by a treatment with tertiary butyl alcohol and fat liquor. One of the two carved rams decorating the object was missing, the other was incomplete. The latter was completed from balsa wood and a copy was made by taking its silicone negative from Duracrol (methyl-metacrylate) which was later coloured to match the hue of the original. The missing wooden pegs were replaced by ones made from wood, finally the flaking resin of the decorative motifs were completed.
