Abstract
As the attribution of Rembrandt's Man with the golden helmet (Berlin) had been questioned by both art historians and conservators, it was decided to have both groups plus scientists examine the painting. A list of examinations/interventions from 1946 to 1985 is given. Information is provided on the canvas and results of pigment analyses. Removal of the varnish and overpainting (using acetone, isopropanol and turpentine) followed, then re-varnishing and retouching over the dammar varnish. No conclusions are drawn as to attribution, but it is mentioned that the ground structure of two different colours is found among Rembrandt's contemporaries, and that cinnabar was found in all the Rembrandt paintings examined but not in the Man with the golden helmet . Tables, photographs, references.
