The factors contributing to the archival quality of a photograph are mostly to be found in the processing. Recent developments (1985) are described which can contribute to archival quality. Resin coated paper might be archival under ideal dark storage conditions, but fibre based paper is better. Many papers contain brighteners which can yellow high lights with time: a paper withour brighteners would be better. The use of trays and tongsdedicated to one material only is advised. If tap water is of doubtful purity, then distilled water should be used. Three possible fixers-sodium and ammonium thiosulphates or a rapid fixer are considered, followed by washing and the possible use of washing aids. He-1, for many years favoured for removing the last traces of hypo, is no longer suggested as a standard procedure. Selenium is preferred over gold for toning but it is hazardous to people. Finally, the importance of clean drying equiupment is emphasised.
