In order to determine the influence of insecticides and fungicides on various coloring materials and vehicles used for Japanese painting (including watercolor, woodcut prints, pastel and oil paintings), colored pencil and acrylic paints were exposed to vapors of eight kinds of insecticides and fungicides for three months. All the vegetable dyes and many inorganic pigments were little affected by the exposure, but, for some pigments such as arsenic sulfide fading or glazing of the applied surface of the objects were observed. The deterioration of coloring materials seems to have been caused by the interaction between vehicles used in coloring materials and solvents used in biocides.
