Removal of cellophane tape is a common need but it can take time. Faced with the prospect of removing some 500 inches (1,250 cm) from a book, the author sought a modification to the usual solvent technique. Cooling with dry ice (carbon dioxide) did not work. A heated soldering iron with spatula tip reduced the time required by more than 75%. Other restorers have used tacking irons or hair dryers for heating the tape but the spatula tip is best because heat is concentrated along a knife edge. Commercially available tools may be used, but it may be necessary to modify the tip. Temperatures in the range of 450-650 degrees F. Are required (230-340 degrees C). Once the tape has been removed then adhesive residues can be removed with solvent. The use of a magnetic plastic sheet over the paper, supported on a metal working surface, will keep it in place.
