Two Inuit parkas made of caribou fur skin and an Ukrainian sheepskin coat were repaired at the Canadian Conservation Institute. The methods of construction of the garments made access to the interior difficult for repairing the tears. Also the fur is very thick, its skin base very fragile. These factors had all to be taken into account when devising repair techniques. The garments were first cleaned. Five adhesives were tested for use, but subsequently others were preferred (addition of cellulose derivatives to acrylic and pva organic solvent solutions). The methods used for repair and backing are described and illustrated with diagrams and photographs. List of references, list of materials and suppliers. In a published discussion with the referees, the practice of shaving fur off before repair is criticised and the criticism answered.
