Abstract
The Society of Archivists' training scheme for archive conservators (UK) is described. First suggested in 1968, it began functioning in 1973. The in-service course comprises 25 weeks of training spread over 2 years and carried out in 12 different centres. The trainees apply what they learn during their normal working hours, as almost all the participants are employed in local record (archive) offices. Instruction is on the one-to-one basis, with continuing assessment. The 25th week is a course of lectures on subjects covered during practical work, followed by a 2-hour examination. The society of archivists'archive conservation certificate is awarded on successful completion of the course.
