Ongoing research and a recent restoration have not completely dispelled the controversy about the authenticity of the White House Washington portrait. The White House picture is believed by most scholars to be one of four full-length portraits painted by Gilbert Stuart in the 1790's. Excerpts from the conservator's report on the picture's technique (as compared to the technique of the other three) and treatment are cited which tend to confinn its authenticity.
