The author discusses a methodology for using the investigation of particular technological procedures to elucidate artistic contacts. He describes briefly the techniques used to produce the relief gilt decoration of halos and backgrounds which characterizes a group of thirteenth century icons. He traces the links among objects featuring such decoration which were produced in geographically widespread regions. -- AATA
