The specialty fibers of mohair, cashmere, camel hair, alpaca and Angora rabbit are compared to Buenos Aires sheep wool in regard to individual fiber diameter, diameter variation along a single fiber, and scale length. In this study, sheep wool had the longest scales and was the most even in diameter of all the fibers examined. The wool fibers did have thicker scales than mohair. Cashmere fibers had broader, thicker and shorter scales than mohair and camel fibers and were the least even of all the fibers. Camel fibers had scales that were very long and gave the fiber a wavy profile. Alpaca fibers had very short, indistinct scales and were usually medullated. Angora rabbit fibers had distinctive chevron scales and, when medullated, were of the lattice type. -- AATA
