Abstract
The painted crypts of pecs inspired some of the eariest restoration efforts in hungary, including an 1864 shelter for the isolation of crypt no. 1 from the surrounding soil, in order to protect it from capillary moisture migration and harmful salts. Later shelters improved the situation but did not completely solve the problem of vapour condensation. 1980 study of overall deterioration mechanisms established the optimal climatic conditions for the crypts. Regular visitors present a problem for achieving these conditions.
