Methods of processing and protecting rattan canes are briefly reviewed (also noting four species of borers recorded in the forest). Observations of cottage industries in the Yogyakarta area, where eight species or groups of commercial rattans are distinguished, showed that powder-post beetle attack (by <i>Dinoderus spp.</i>) was common both in raw materials and in furniture. <i>Calamus manan</i> was highly resistant, <i>C. caesius</i> and <i>C. scipionum</i> were resistant, and the unidentified but commonly used species kokrok was highly susceptible to powder-post beetle. Results suggest that preservative treatments should be developed for the susceptible species. -- AATA
