Arson damage to the collections of the Los Angeles Public Library, April 29, 1986, is reported. Volunteers, under the direction of Document Reprocessors of San Francisco, removed a million salvageable volumes from the premises in a little over three days (80 hours), wet books being placed at once in commercial freezers and dry books stored at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Firemen responding to the blaze took precautions of covering stack ranges with plastic sheeting to protect whatever materials they could from water cascading down from the upper floors. Volunteer assistance has been available from local corporations and government agencies. The library was not equipped with sprinkler systems and the alarm system was not directly tied into an emergency number system. -- AATA
