The conservation of objects brought up from the sea or lakebeds and other submerged environments poses special problems. Formidable difficulties arise at the very moment of discovery, while all treatments must take into account various complex alterations to the deep structure of materials. Criteria for choosing specific treatments for wet leather and wet organic materials -- textile, cordage and grasses, bone and ivory, and other materials such as rubber and cork -- are discussed.
