Abstract
Application of mechanical stress to wet clay in a magnetic field induces remnant magnetization in it. The mean direction of the stress-induced remnant magnetization deflects from the ambient earth's magnetic field direction. The deflection angle increases by impact force, and decreases by static force. The intensity of the stress-induced remnant magnetization measured ranged from 10<sup>-6</sup> to 10<sup>-4</sup> emu/gr. These values are comparable to those of the thermoremnant magnetization of baked clay. The 58 clay samples taken from the foundation made of layered clay of the Kandoji temple ruin in Izumo City, Shimane prefecture, show a sharply converged direction, and their declination angles are between the remnant and ambient earth's magnetic fields. The inclination of the remnant magnetization is shallower by 25 degrees. The ancient clay structure consolidated by the perpendicularly applied force can be used for archaeological dating by comparing the declination of its remnance with that of the earth's magnetic field in the past. -- AATA
