Highly skewed data are common in archaeological analysis. Re-expression is a means by which the distributional properties of a variable can be improved to approximate the assumptions of many parametric statistics or to expose unanticipated aspects of the data as a part of an exploratory data analysis. Data-based transformations which improve variable symmetry are discussed as well as a computer assisted graphics technique developed by Wilk and Gnanadesikan (1968) which allows an informal visual assessment of the data. -- AATA
