The weather conditions of the <i>Batavia</i> wreck-site permitted a continuous process of sorting, cleaning, and limited on-site conservation; some mechanical cleaning of the artifacts was done, but the emphasis of the work was to maintain a stable storage environment. The excavation procedure is described. Shaped sandstone building blocks were the first objects recovered from the site. At the end of the excavation these were cleaned, consolidated, and assembled; the special support system built for the reconstruction and display of the portico is described; its design allows for future repair or consolidation of individual blocks. The hull, which was excavated over the course of three seasons, has remained in holding tanks for ten years. A suggestion is made for a storage tank which would facilitate ongoing research during the consolidation process. Other problems in preparing for the hull reconstruction are described.
