Abstract
In the 1970's the Hermitage Museum launched a major underwater archaeological project in the northwestern USSR. The excavation of Serteia II utilizes horizontal as well as vertical movement to survey the site and leave the remains intact; draining the site would not permit this approach. Draining water-filled pits frequently leads to destruction of organic materials by allowing them to dry out. -- AATA
