The Norsk Sjofartsmuseum utilizes the services of amateur divers in its marine archaeology program; the responsibilities, work, and administration of this volunteer system are described. The use of the grid and the use of the glass rod are explained. The museum's cataloging and conservation procedures are presented. Legislation regarding maritime finds encourages public cooperation and discourages illicit treasure hunting. The underwater terrain along the Norwegian coastline is very rocky; hence only the bottom of ships which have been buried in mud have been found intact. The museum's experiences with three different shipwrecks are recounted. -- AATA
