Abstract
Vitruvius's description for preparing the surface of a wall for painting was compared to x-ray diffraction investigations of the levelling plaster from sites in Pannonia (modern Hungary). 4 major composition groups were identified. A fifth type, coloured red with haematite, is unique to pannonia. Specific workshops and relative chronology can be identified from the plaster compositions. Map, charts, references.
