This community was one of the largest furniture-producing centers in inland Massachusetts. The workshops were centralized in town rather than being located at the home. The Windsor chair lent itself to the division of labor: apprentices or journeymen produced parts such as bows, rods, legs, or seat; the master assembled the parts. Native woods were used. The blacksmith and hardware-store owner supplied and repaired the woodworkers' equipment. The selection of colors increased from late 18th to the early 19th century. The 1820's marked a transition from the small domestic industry to large-scale production techniques. -- AATA
