Abstract
The condition before treatment and the subsequent consolidation of the wooden parts of an eighteenth century English fire engine are described. Experiments on a range of possible consolidants are outlined, and the application of poly(vinyl butyral) (Butvar B90, Monsanto) by both brushing and vacuum methods is presented. A closing discussion examines the relationship of the experimental findings to the practical application, the need for consolidation, and the final results of the treatment.
