Fundamental requirements of mortars for restoration are a low content of soluble salts, and mechanical, thermal and structural characteristics as similar as possible to those of the ancient masonry, usually made of natural stones and bricks. The author discusses the main problems concerning mortars, grouts, and plasters to be used in conservation. He stresses the need for standard methods of analysis and quality control procedures, and defines some future developments.
