The vale of Pickering in north Yorkshire (England) is best known for its early mesolithic sites. The area contains wet peat deposits which contain an extensive environmental record of the mesolithic period as well as faunal material. Due to an increase in present agricultural activity the peat deposits have suffered extensively from drainage.
