Abstract
The site of Kaman-Kaleh÷y k, in central Anatolia, has a long and distant past. The material that has been excavated from this archaeological site includes pottery vessels. During the Middle and Late Bronze Age, in the second millennium B.C., special pottery vessels were made with curved or rounded bases and are thought to have been thrown upside down on the wheel. During the Late Iron Age, 800 to 600 B.C., pottery was thrown right side up on the wheel. Between these two periods in the history of the site, the Dark Ages occurred and lasted from 1200 to 800 B.C. Knowledge of ceramic technology employed during this era is scant because of the limited materials available. The purpose of this project is to determine through a compatative analysis the means by which pottery was made at Kaman-Kaleh÷y k during the Dark Ages. The technique chosen for this analysis are x-ray radiography and xero-radiography, both non-destructive techniques. Supplementary to these analytical methods, x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy was also preformed to create a file of spectra indicating elements present on the surfaces of each fragment. It is hoped that through a comparison of dated material from all three periods that a better understanding of techniques of pottery manufacture can be determined for the Dark Ages of Kaman-Kaleh÷y k. The results obtained indicate that the sherds analyzed were all made on the potter's wheel. The samples from the Dark Ages were wheel thrown. It is difficult to determine if they were produced in the same manner as pottery from the Middle and Late Bronze Age or the Late Iron Age. The results stated in this report should be considered preliminary; due to the limited sample size it is impossible to conclude with any great certainty the mode of pottery manufacture.
