Abstract
The unique double-vaulted octagonal cupola of Santa Maria del Fiore was achieved using a design by Filippo Brunelleschi, who also invented machines that were integral to his techniques for constructing the cupola. Some 15th-century drawings of these machines survive, and are used by the author to describe how the cupola was built.
