Beading a garment includes selecting a design, selecting a fabric, choosing appropriate tools, and attaching the beads using needle and thread. Beading requires that the fabric be stretched and held taut. There are two methods of attaching beads to cloth: stitching them onto the fabric one at a time, and couching them with either one thread or two. Nearly any fabric is appropriate for beading and good quality cotton or polyester thread is adequate, but beading needles are thinner and longer than regular sewing needles. Basic techniques are illustrated by the construction of a beaded design on two blouses. Retail and wholesale sources of beading supplies are listed.
