Abstract
Different types of pottery found at Morgantina, Sicily, Italy were analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) at the Istituto di Ingegneria Nucleare-Milano; the concentrations of 18 elements were determined for about 100 samples. In order to identify the basic fabric of Morgantina, INAA was applied to local modern clays as well as on common items and different types of fine tablewares such as black glaze Campana C and red glaze Presigillata, assumed to be local. Most samples turned out to be of similar, local origin; a very good correspondence was found between pottery and local clays. It is felt that these results will be useful as a fingerprint of the Morgantina fabric for further investigation of Sicilian pottery in ancient times.
