The author distinguishes between reproductions and forgeries. He describes a 1587 map of North and South America by Abraham Ortelius examined at the National Map Collection, Ottawa, using normal, ultraviolet, and transmitted illumination. Comparison with a known original of the same map revealed significant technical discrepancies and provided clear evidence that the map is a reproduction. -- AATA
