The treatment of decorative wall painting on paper, an animal frieze by Charles Catton, RA, dating from the later 18th century, is described. The paper had previously been overpainted with lead white and the surface had been treated with wax and possibly linseed oil. Calcium sulfate, lead sulfate and calcium carbonate salts had migrated to the surface of the paper. Cleaning and poulticing tests showed that a 5% solution of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt cleaned effectively yet safely. The importance of selecting such a chelate carefully and checking for unwanted chelation of the painted surface are stressed. -- AATA
