Nine documents giving specifications and standards on the permanence of photographic materials have been published by the American National Standards Institute. Preservation is dependent upon the characteristics of the photographic material, the photographic processing, and the storage conditions. The first two are combined into material specifications while storage conditions are covered in separate standards. Photographic materials are classified as either archival, long-term, or medium-term depending on their ultimate storage life. Specifications have been written for black-and-white silver, diazo, and vesicular films. Work is currently underway on test method procedures for evaluating the permanence of color images and preparing a specification for photographic paper. -- AATA
