Covering about 12 ha, Ain Ghazal constitutes one of the largest known pre-pottery Neolithic B sites, exceeded in size only by Tell Abu Hureyra in northern Syria. The site is characterized by abundant lithic material - about a quarter of a million chipped stone artifacts have been unearthed; by a remarkable cache of plaster human statues and busts of unparalleled quality and state of preservation; and by evidence of organizational complexity within the community. Preliminary 14C dating results are consistent with other such sites, 8000 to 9000 B.P.
