Abstract
Requirements for the conservation of the finds from the waterfront of Haithabu and the large quantity of wood limited the choices of treatment methods. Impregnation with polyethylene glycol (PEG 4000) was chosen as the most practical approach. The procedure is reported as well as the results of the treatment. The freeze-drying process is described in detail.
