Abstract
During the excavation of a landfill site in lower Manhattan, the remains of a ship were discovered; the developer provided funds to excavate the ship, documenting as much as possible in the allotted time, and removing the bow to conserve for a future display. The construction of the tanks for this project is described in detail. The conservation procedures for the wood are presented: cleaning and examination; wood analysis; assessment of pre-immersion damage; evaluation of post-immersion damage; the results of various tests -- i. e., flexure, compression, hardness; specific gravity; condition report; chemical cleaning treatment; controlled drying; freeze-drying; and thermal vacuum drying.
