Abstract
A polyethylene glycol (PEG) water system is the usual choice of a conservator faced with stabilizing large waterlogged wooden objects; the advantages are health, safety, and cost. Reported are the results of a photomicrographic investigation of the behavior of various PEG's in stabilizing European oak at different degrees of degradation, and the sorption characteristics of the treated wood are indicated. The method is described.
