Abstract
Waterlogged wooden artifacts are usually composite objects containing metal. Problems arise because treatments for wood and metal are quite different, and separating the component parts usually cannot be done because the materials are fragile. Treatments of archaeological metal should extract chlorides or other salts, dry the metal, and create a stable surface; for wood, the treatments are supposed to limit the dimensional changes (the shrinkage), and to produce a stable and durable material. Several methods were analyzed to see whether any of them could satisfy the conservation goals: the experiments and results are given.
