Abstract
Milligram-sized archaeological and environmental samples were * h14* scarbon dated using 15-centimeter<sup>3</sup> proportional counters in a modified radiocarbon dating system. To calibrate the 15-centimeter<sup>3</sup> system, samples were first counted in a large conventional gas-proportional system, and then in the 15-centimeter<sup>3</sup> system. Analysis of counting data for the two <sup>14</sup>carbon age determinations indicated that they were in statistical agreement. Additional analysis of the very low count-rate for <sup>14</sup>carbon dating systems using small (15-centimeter<sup>3</sup>) counting tubes shows that under favorable conditions the stated deviation of the age determination can be significantly reduced by long sample counts. Experience with the determination of <sup>14</sup>carbon ages of milligram-size samples suggests that it is always desirable to date larger samples. Such * h14*scarbon dates are less costly and much more precise and accurate. -- AATA
