With the exception of the state of Victoria, which is receiving state funding, preliminary studies were conducted with federal funds administered by the Australian Heritage Commission. The studies varied in their methodology but generally aimed at inventorying important historic gardens throughout Australia and searching for means to ensure their protection. This essay focuses on the author's own project in Victoria and outlines aims and results.
