Abstract
Badly preserved leaded bronzes from the village of Ban Chiang in northeast Thailand were examined in order to determine the best method of conservation. A combination of mechanical apparatus proved to be the most advantageous. Three techniques were used in combination: an ultrasonic scaler, an electronically regulated mounter's hammer, and an air abrasive. The examination of the cleaned bronzes revealed an astonishing range of manufacturing techniques. This makes the study of the Thai bronze working artistry of the first millenium BC particularly interesting as it is equivalent and perhaps superior to the bronze workmanship of contemporary civilizations. -- AATA
