Stirrup-jars with Linear inscriptions were found at Thebes in 1921 and at about the same time clay tablets inscribed in Linear B script were excavated at Knossos on Crete. Archaeological finds and textual analysis of the inscriptions on the jars and the Knossos tablets suggest a west Cretan origin for the jars. Spectrographic analysis of 25 stirrup jars from Thebes and pottery from Zakro and Palaikastro in easte Crete led earlier workers to conclude that 18 of the stirrup,jars had come from east Crete. This paper argues that further con sideration ought to be given to the sherds selected for analysis and the data obtained and that the data does not justify a conclusion of an east Cretan provenance for the stirrup-jars. -- AATA
