Evidence is presented showing which techniques were used for making wire in the early medieval period (i.e., before 1000 AD) in northern Europe and in Italy. The hand technique of block-twisting was most common, but hammering and strip-twisting were also used. Drawing was a rare technique; it is suggested that the draw plate may have been invented in this period.
