Abstract
A review of past work in evaluating the aging properties of several conservation-related adhesives by the CCI staff is presented. Specifically, data on the rate of yellowing of a number of epoxies currently being used for conservation purposes, both by artificial and natural (dark) aging, are presented. This study, and a similar one begun at CCI in evaluating the poly(vinyl acetates) currently in use, suggested that a more widespread study of the physical/chemical behavior of adhesives as they age be implemented. A strategy for a more systematic study is presented, and areas of concern are identified. These include changes in pH, emission of dangerous degradation products, changes in flexibility, shrinkage, solubility, and discoloration.
