The curriculum of the Division of Historic Preservation, Columbia University, New York (USA), has been recently expanded into the area of the conservation of wooden architecture. A workshop in the traditional use of craft tools is offered; three laboratory investigations are in progress and these are discussed at length: the use of biocidal wood extractives; the use of alkoxysilanes for wood treatments; and fluid dynamics of the conservation of porous materials.
