Abstract
Conservation of historic buildings in Japan is primarily concerned with wooden structures of three periods, the protohistoric, the ancient and medieval, and the premodern and modern. Each period is reviewed and examples are given. Three aspects of construction are described: the orientation of structural members, the methods of joining, and a stereometry technique for drawing lines.
