Abstract
The text of this paper was originally presented at the Cambridge conference on the Conservation of Library and Archival Materials and the Graphic Arts (1980), and was published in the pre-prints of that conference. Keyes is concerned with alternatives to chemical bleaching and discusses the following in her paper: the use of magnesium bicarbonate, calcium carbonate, and ammonia to adjust the pH of wash water to a higher alkalinity which aids in the release of discoloration; alcohols as wetting agents for heavily sized papers; enzymes; the use of the vacuum suction table to effectively draw dissolved substances out of the paper structure; and sunlight as a bleaching agent.
